Word Association Party Mode
The spoken word association chain, with the timer, turn order and knockouts handled for you.
Word association game rules
- Sit in a circle. One phone runs the game and gets passed along with the turn.
- A random seed word appears. The first player says a word they associate with it.
- The next player associates with that word, and so on around the circle.
- You are out if you hesitate past the timer, repeat a word already said this round, or the group votes your link nonsense.
- Last player standing wins the round. Play best of three.
House rules worth trying
- No categories. Ban the lazy chain of "dog, cat, bird, fish". Every link has to be a real jump.
- Explain or die. Anyone may challenge a link; the speaker gets five seconds to justify it.
- Themed rounds. Lock the seed to one category from the generator.
- Speed round. Drop the timer to three seconds for the final two players.
Playing word association without a phone
It travels well: no board, no cards, no setup. It works in a car, on a hike, in a queue, at a dinner table, and as an icebreaker with people who would rather not play an icebreaker. If you want prompts on paper instead, the word association lists are printable.
