This or That for Work

A five-minute team icebreaker. No slides to build, no signup, no oversharing.

Play This or That for work, free

Every other result for this phrase is a list of a hundred questions and a suggestion that you build a slide deck. This page deals them instead. Open it, press start, and you are running the icebreaker — tap a side, the next card appears, and ten questions later you are done. On a laptop the left and right arrow keys play the whole round, so you can run it while screen-sharing without touching the mouse.

Why work icebreakers usually fail

Because they ask people to reveal something. “Tell us a fun fact about yourself” asks the quietest person in the room to perform, on the spot, in front of their manager. This or That asks nothing of the sort. It asks about habits everyone already has an opinion about and nobody minds admitting — and because the answer is one tap, the pace never drops.

The work questions

Nothing about politics, money, relationships or anyone’s body. Nothing that could land badly in a mixed-seniority room.

How to run it

  1. Press start. The work pack is already loaded on this page.
  2. Set the round length to 10 for the top of a meeting, or 30 for an offsite.
  3. Remote: share your screen and have everyone put A or B in the chat. You get a visible split in seconds with no poll to configure.
  4. In the room: switch to pass-and-play in Options, put everyone’s name in, and pass one phone round. The results screen shows how the team divided on each question, which two people agreed most, and which question caused the most trouble.
  5. Keep it moving. If someone starts explaining their answer, that is the cue to go to the next card — the explaining is what makes icebreakers drag.

Team building, onboarding and retros

It fits anywhere you have five minutes and a room that has not warmed up. New starter on the call? Ten questions gives them something to say that is not their job title. Retro that has gone flat? Run a round before the first column. Offsite? Pass-and-play with the whole group and read the agreement stats out — the two people with the most similar answers are never the two everyone expects.

This or That or Would You Rather at work?

Would You Rather asks people to imagine something and then justify it, which is exactly where a work icebreaker stalls. This or That asks about preferences people already have, so nobody has to perform and the pace holds. For a quiet team with five minutes, This or That is the more reliable of the two.

Common questions

Is it free, and is there an account?

Free, with no account, no download and no paywall. Nothing anyone answers leaves their device, and there is nothing to install.

How many people can play?

Up to ten in pass-and-play on one device. On a screen-share there is no limit, because everyone just answers in the chat.

Can I mix in lighter categories?

Yes. Open Options and turn on Food, Travel or Funny alongside Work. In December, the Christmas pack is the usual choice for the last call of the year.

Does it work on a phone?

It is built for one. Large tap targets, no pinching, and pass-and-play is designed around handing a single phone round a table.
