What you need

Two to twenty players and one phone — or, if you are playing on paper, something for everyone to write on that the others cannot see. Games run about 20 minutes.

The aim

Win eight cows. You win a cow by writing the same answer as most of the group. You are not trying to be clever, funny or right; you are trying to be average. That inversion is the entire game.

Playing a round

  1. Read the question. One person reads it aloud so everybody hears the same wording.
  2. Answer in secret. Everyone writes one answer. No discussion, no hints, no faces.
  3. Reveal together. All answers come out at once.
  4. Award cows. Everyone who wrote the most common answer takes a cow.
  5. Pass the Pink Cow. If exactly one player wrote something nobody else did, they take it.

The Pink Cow

The Pink Cow is a lock, not a penalty. You keep collecting cows while holding it, but you cannot win. It only moves when there is exactly one odd answer — if two or more players are each alone, nobody is the odd one out and the Pink Cow stays put. Get rid of it by being ordinary again while somebody else is not.

Winning

The first player to eight cows without the Pink Cow wins immediately. Playing a shorter game? Four or six cows works fine; this site lets you set the target before you start.

Edge cases

Two-player and large-group notes

With two players it becomes a pure guess-what-they-said duel: you either match or you both stay put. With ten or more, the majority gets genuinely hard to read, and questions with fewer obvious answers ("name a colour of the rainbow") play better than open ones.

Herd Mentality FAQ

Is there an online version of Herd Mentality?
Yes. This site is a free browser version for 2 to 20 players. It runs on one phone passed around the group — no download, no account, and nothing to install. There are 130 questions across 4 packs.
How do you play Herd Mentality?
Everyone answers the same question in secret. Reveal together: whoever wrote the most common answer wins a cow. If exactly one player is the odd one out, they are stuck with the Pink Cow. First to eight cows wins — but you cannot win while holding the Pink Cow.
What happens if there is a tie for the majority answer?
The printed rules assume one obvious majority and do not resolve a tie. This version awards a cow to every tied group, because on a 2/2/1 split the alternative is nobody scoring, which makes short games drag. The reveal screen always shows exactly which answers scored.
When does the Pink Cow move?
Only when exactly one player gave a unique answer. If two or more players are each on their own, nobody is the odd one out and the Pink Cow stays where it is.
How many players do you need for Herd Mentality?
It works from 2 players, but it comes alive at 4 or more — you need enough people for a real majority to form. This version supports up to 20, which is more than the tabletop box handles.
Can I use my own questions?
Any question works as long as it has lots of plausible answers and one obvious crowd-pleaser. Pick a pack that suits your table, or read questions off the lists on this site and play with pen and paper.
